Full Spectrum vs. Isolate
If CBD is so great, then why do we insist on creating a full spectrum hemp extract instead of just isolating the CBD molecule by itself? The answer is found in something referred to as the “Entourage Effect”.
Cannabis has many medicinally beneficial components beyond just the single cannabinoid, CBD. In truth, all of the compounds of cannabis are capable of working synergistically when consumed. One of the most important compounds present in a full spectrum tincture are the other cannabinoids! THC is the cannabinoid that we typically associate with the intoxicating effects. However, in small amounts, it offers some incredible medicinal benefits as well. Other cannabinoids that have been observed to have some therapeutic effects are CBC, CBN, and CBG. These are currently understudied, and some more research needs to happen before we can fully understand just how beneficial these compounds can be.
Another important part of the cannabis plant that is found in hemp extract are the terpenoids. Terpenoids are the aromatic molecules found in the essential oils of lots of plants. Cannabis is naturally rich in these molecules (so much so that it benefits the plant by warding off grazers and fungus) and why it has such a distinctive smell. The terpenoid profile of the cannabis plant offers even more medicinally beneficial effects. For instance, linalool, typically found in lavender, has been shown to have great anti-anxiety effects. When the various cannabinoids and terpenoids are present, they affect each other’s mechanisms and work together to create different reactions within the body.
Studies have shown that when you have CBD in the presence of these other essential compounds of the hemp plant, it is more efficient at providing the desired effect. You’ll get more “mileage” out of your full spectrum hemp extract than you would the same dosage of pure CBD, which can be quite nice on the pockets when you’re paying for a high-quality tincture. We strongly feel that full spectrum is the best option when incorporating CBD into your daily regime. At Peninsula Holisitics, we believe the entire cannabis plant has something to offer in the way of wellness more so than just a single compound and we’re excited to continue to monitor the research as it unfolds over the next few years.
